This was a sweet friends to more story where the two main characters had to overcome some pretty ingrained issues holding them back. Throughout the book, it was nice to see how close Mason and Lindsay had become as friends, with their evening times of talking and sharing their day being important to them both. It was clear that Mason was also very connected with Lindsay’s children and cared about them, which was sweet.
I think Mason felt that all he could offer Lindsay was this level of friendship and no more, because of his fear of losing any more people close to him. Lindsay carried a bit of that fear, as well, after losing her husband. I sometimes felt that Mason was a study in contradictions. He had some great examples in his extended family, such as his grandparents, of romances that lasted through the ages and remained strong, yet Mason was scared to commit. That was a bit frustrating at times and was the main issue that he had to deal with in his journey through this novel.
This story is book two in its series, yet it can be read as a stand alone book, even if you have not read book one in the Smoky Mountain First Responder’s series.
